Anya sat in class, head in hand, leaning on her desk and staring out the window at the passing clouds. They were thin, wispy. They looked like a painter had swiftly swiped his brush across the canvas with white. Ironic, she was sitting in art class. The teacher was about ten minutes late now. She was anxious to get started, a new teacher, a new project, plus art was her favorite subject. She'd always loved painting but she also had a little interst in pottery.
The teacher finally walked in and....
Well, the sun came out and shone down right in her eyes just then. Even though the clouds were thin, they had been covering the sun but now it beat down into her lashes. She squinted and that's when she heard the clouds outside brushing their soft voices across her ears. Only this time they weren't as soft...they were much louder and rather urgent. She didn't understand exactly why, normally she only ever felt anything like that when something big was about to happen to her but she didn't get what could happen during art class.

Jairus-- or rather, Mister Benigno-- strode across the room to the desk at the other side. He dropped his load of papers and books onto it and turned around to face the class. He felt a little worn down from his previous few classes and the thought of having to remember so many more students didn't help.
He clapped his hands together and introduced himself. "My name," he started, projecting his voice so everyone could hear. "Is Jairus Benigno. I do not expect you to call me Mister Benigno, but because we are in school on a teacher-student basis, I ask that you do, but the mister is optional." He gave a wink to his audience and strode across the room to the supply closets.
"If you've attended Leonardo Academy before, you will know I am new at this school. If you haven't, well... now you know." He opened an unmarked cabinet and took out a stack of colored paper, handing two to each person. "Today, I want to get to know you. You are to use any mediums you please, but only these two pieces of paper. Paints are there, pastels and crayons there, pencils and charcoal there," he instructed, pointing to various parts of the vast room. "Get to work."

ANya's hand instantly shot up with a couple questions. "Mr. Benigno, may we use more zhan one medium? And are we just showing vhat ve like?" She started to think of things she liked. And she only came up with two things...
The night sky and the morning sky...
"Guess I'll be using paint..."
She waited for him to answer, considering her methods of work: how she'd dot the night sky and make a moon; what kind of moon to make; a dawn sky or post-dawn sky; wispy clouds or puffy clouds; sun behind or infront of the clouds. She went over all of the options in her mind while she waited.

Benigno was taken by surprise. None of his other students had been so immersed by their basic project as this girl. "Why, of course," he replied. "Of course, umm..." He then realized he did not have a seating chart, and dismissed the thought. "Feel free to use whatever mediums you want. And you are not limited to what you like. You may create whatever you please." He smiled at his student and moved on to answer other questions from other students. When the talking died down and the students began to work, Benigno sat in his chair, glad for a few minutes of rest. He casually leaned back and began to paw aimlessly through the bodies and souls of the children in the room.

Anya grabbed some black paint, white and blue colored pencils, some yellow paint, red paint, white paint, orange paint, and purple and she set off to do her night and dawn skies. She aimlessy doteed the paper with white and blue, using the colored pencil she had grabbed. She then painted over that with water and then dipped into her black paint, moving it to and fro on the paper. The little white and blue specks showed up through the paint thanks to the water. And when she was done with that she placed it on the drying rack and proceeded onto her dawn sky. She treated it like a sun set, a vast horizon with the sky fading from dark purple to light yellow with half of a yellow disk sticking out from the far horizon line. She finished with that and, just like the clouds outside, made wispy little pink clouds around the sun that floated in the colorful sky. And then she was done and had nothing to do. She was always a fast and efficient worker and was often done long before the other students were. She sat patiently, staring outside again and wondering why there had been that random outburst of voices from the sky earlier. She pondered it and then she realized that in her mind they had gone back down but were very slowly rising again.

Benigno got bored fast. Although these teens were at the most dramatic points in their lives, they really had nothing going on inside-- no surprise. He started drifting off into memories of Lynne, but stopped himself so he wouldn't become emotional n the first day with these students. With a sigh, he heaved himself off his chair and started wandering around the room, peering over the shoulders of the artists. Although everything-- in a sense-- is art, these things were pretty bad...
Benigno finally found himself at the table where the girl from before was sitting. She was staring off out of the window, no papers in front of her. Benigno cleared his throat to get her attention.

Anya was startled out of her deep thought as Mr. Benigno-- or as he wanted to be called, Benigno-- appeared behind her and cleared his throat. Normally it was pretty hard to sneak up on her, she had great reflexes and absolutely excellent hearing. She looked up at him, pivoting in her chair to face him. "Yes, Mr. Benigno?" She ared to said in a tiny voice. He was rather tall compared to her, especially while sitting down. She also was not very used to being directly addressed by a teacher unless she addressed them first. His looming kind of made her uncomfortable.

Benigno wondered if he had startled her.
"I was just wondering if you have been working," he said, still unsure of her name. "Everyone else is working hard on their project, and I see you sitting here, dreaming. Is there something wrong with this assignment that permits you not to do it?" He tried not to sound angry, because he wasn't, but it was hard. He kept his voice low and gentle, as so not to draw the attention of her peers.

Anya's eyes widened a little, in an innocent fashion more than a scared fashion but she was a little startled and more than a little flustered. "Oh, um, vell, I, uh, finished alread..." She fumbled. And then she looked up at him from her hands, right into his eyes and a little twinge inside her brain scattered her thoughts. "Vhat in Goddess' name?" She silently asked. Something just kind of clicked or something, just like a little light switch flicking on. But that light switch apparantly had been dormant her whole life. And then her world totally shifted itself in a matter of a heartbeat, all the while she kept staring at those eyes, more flustered than before. Her mouth was open as if to say something but nothing came out. And then she dropped her eyes but her world was still kind of shifting...
"Oh, my..."

Benigno stared right back into her eyes that second and quickly drew his eyes away. The deep violet color stabbed at his heart, ripping it into a thousand bloodied pieces and scattering them across the face of the earth. He used all his strength to hold back all his emotions-- something he hadn't bothered to do for a long time... His throat closed more than usual, and he felt light-headed and faint. All kinds of buried secrets from his past came rushing out of the far corners of his mind, pounding through his blood...
And then it cleared. The world was bright, and this girl...
No! He fought back at his own being. This is NOT my Lynne! No one will EVER replace my Lynne!
But look. She's right there... calling for you... so close...
NO!
Benigno turned back to the girl, keeping his eyes focused on her hair, her ear, her shoulder-- anything but her eyes. "Really, you finished? That was fast. Will you show me?"

Anya Shifted her gaze from his eyes to the spot between them but just as she looked away she noticed a slight flash in them. She wondered why. So strange. "Uh, sure." She promptly lifted herself up from her desk, hasitly glideing over to the drying rack and carefully, oh so carefully, pulled out her two e was actually rather fasipaintings, now almost dry. "I just did vhat I liked, I hope zhis is okay..." She chewed her bottom lip a little, getting a taste of blood. She'd forgotten to put on chap-stick and now her lips were a bloody mess-- literally. Most people were scared at the sight of blood but not her, she was actually rather fasinated by it. She peered up at him, this time at the lump of cutely mussed hair on his head and waited for a reply, still chewing her lip.

Benigno studied the paintings, fascinated. "The craftsmanship..." he thought in awe, before realizing he had thought aloud. He turned back to the paintings. One was dawn, one was night. He couldn't comprehend how such masterpieces could be created by such a child-- in such a short time, no less... He conducted another search, directed at her and made sure her power wasn't art. And it wasn't.
Setting them back on the drying rack, he patted her shoulder, but quickly dropped his hand at the electric rush consuming his arm. He praised her instead. "I have never seen a more well-created piece," he told her, grasping for the right words. "You will be a fine addition to my class. What is your name?"

Anya stuttered. "...A-anya. Anya Ivashkov." She could feel her face burning beat red at the electric shock that coursed through her and quickly turned her face away. "Vhat is happening to me?" She silently pleaded to whatever force heard and could possibly answer her.
By mistake, as she looked up to thank him for the compliments she looked into his eyes again. But she didn't feel anything that she had felt the last time. Instead, this time, she felt a great, ominous wvae of awe and flabbergastedness crash over her and wash her away. She felt light-headed and dizzy. She thought she heard the breath rush out of her but she couldn't be sure. And then her knees buckled under her and just gave out, letting her fall to the ground.

"Woah!"
Benigno was about to leave to go check on the other students, but Ayna's faint has take him completely by surprise. He reached down and grabbed her arm, pulling her up as best he could and held her shoulders once she was standing. His heart raced and he didn't know what to do.
"Do you want me to send you to the nurse!??!" he practically cried in her face. This is NUTS, he thought, feeling crazed. What kind of student am I DEALING with!??! He was suddenly awae of the entire class focusing their eyes on him.

Anya put her hand to her head and then felt strong hands gripping her and pulling her up. "Do you want me to send you to the nurse!??!" She was shaken away from a thought that had developed in her mind, one that was important and she knew it. She also knew it was from the Goddess, she knew when she got those thoughts. But she lost it and blinked in confusion. She had just collapsed in front of everyone in art class. Including Benigno. "How embarassing. Exactly vhat I need, something else to get teased about." She thought.
But she couldn't help but think about his offer to go to the nurse. She didn't need to but it would be an excuse to get away from class and all the chaos. But all that chaos was in her mind and she knew she wouldn't be able to escape it. And she had a strange sensation that made her want to stay in the same room as Benigno. It was a rather light, airy, coressing feeling, not a bad one, not bad at all. She shook her head coming back to real-time and, with out a word, proceeded to sit down in her seat.
