Anya snuck out of her dorm room, feeling anxious to be outside, close to the night, close to the stars. She didn't appreciate the cold that crept up on her that made gooseflesh on her arms rise up so she dashed back inside quickly and grabbed a knitted sweater, slipping it over her silk pajama top. She walked out of the commons dressed head-to-toe in silk and slippers, waking up in the middle of the night with that anxious feeling again. It hadn't been the first time that week. The past three days she'd been getting random itches to go outside and just gaze at the stars, be close to them, listen to what they whispered to her. Unfortunatly, being out of dorms past 10:00 at night was against rules which meant she had to break school rules. She hated that with a deep passion. She could feel her eyes changing ever so slightly as she thought about being caught out of bed in the middle of the night.
She walked over to the North Wall, the same spot she'd gone for the last three nights. There was a small spot on the ground clear of snow that she gently laid herself down in and simply lifted her head, watching the dazzling sparks dance and wink infront of her. The sky was a large, dark ocean, speckled with firecrackers that sang to Anya. But the moon didn't sing. No. It spelled things out to her. No one understood Anya's power-- or as she though of it, blessing-- which made her even more of an outcast. And each night as she lay there, listening to the stars' melodies, she realized just how alone she was and how desperately she wanted the company of another living person. She loved animals and plants and any living thing but they couldn't have a conversation with her. No. She wanted someone she could interact with, not observe or admire. Sure, she'd love to have someone to admire, maybe even someone who admired her back, but she wanted a friend, a comrade, a partner. Someone to hang around with. She wanted someone. But she'd never get someone.
How silly. She thought just because she moved to a new school, for just one instant believed, that she might find a friend. But that's mcuh too far out of the question. Even if normal isn't exactly normal around here, she just wasn't someone that fit in with people. She never would. Any normal person would probably cry. Though she was sad at this thought, she did not cry. She'd been alone for most of her life, she was pretty much used to it by now. As long as she had the stars and the sky, she could cope. "But I don't know for how much longer..." She thought uncertainly. She waved it off and went back to watching the peacful, clear night sky, illuminated by the millions of diamonds scattered all over and the one, large silver dollar slapped in the middle, shining silver light all around everything that looked up to it.

Matty opened his eyes warily and say stars. Whaaa?... he wondered before feeling a sharp JAB in his foot. In a moment, he was on the dirty ground wondering what had happened. He rubbed his eyes and looked around, taking in the sights.
Am I at the North WALL!??! his brain blared out. How did that happen? He answered himself. Sleepwalking. This is bad... Matty hadn't caught himself sleepwalking in just over two years. Please don't make this become a regular thing... he pleaded in his head. Not now, not in SCHOOL! It would be embarrassing to accidentally walk somewhere BAD in the middle of the night...
Matty pushed the thoughts out of his head and stood up, dusting off his boxers and undershirt. (He outgrew pajamas in 4th grade) He started to attempt to find his way back to the dorm in the dim moonlight when something small ticked in his head. There's someone here? he wondered. Isn't that against the rules? Of course, he didn't realize he himself was breaking them, too. He started to wander in the direction of the chain of thoughts.

Anya was jabbed out of her day dream that swirled through the stars when she noticed someone else roaming around outside. "Hello?" She said quietly in her slight accent. "Is there someone there?" She didn't want to talk too loudly incase it was someone that would bust her.
Very quietly and very slowly, melting into the shadows as she knew she could do thanks to her uncanny night powers, she sat up and squinted into the pending darkness. Although she had rather good night vision for a human, again thanks to her night powers (most people thought they were just stars and moon crap but it was more than that, all of the night was a velvety friend to her), she couldn't see incredibly well. Anya saw a misty figure a little ways away but that was all she could really make out. She quietly backed up against the tree, further blending herself with the black shadows that engulfed the world.

Matty heard a soft voice break the silence of the night... Well, the silence of the little crickets and frogs, anyways.
He walked nearer, cautious now that it was a definite fact that someone else was out and about after curfew. The thoughts were becoming clearer with each step, so he knew he was going in the right direction, but he couldn't make anything out. It was foggy and distant-- maybe even in a different language.
"Yes..." he said aloud, keeping his voice to hushed tones. "Who are you?" He took another step forward and tripped on another rock that jabbed his foot even harder than the first. He fell into the soft grass with a muffled THUD and gave a piercing "ACK!" that ripped through the peaceful night air. He sat up, spitting dirt out of his mouth, and looked around, trying to make out another human being.

Anya heard the barely-audible voice respond to her questions. She took a silent sigh of relief as she made out the voice of another student before answering, "I'm only a student" in an assuring voice.
She heard as the figure, she now knew to be a boy, fell and hurt himself. She silently got up and wistfully walked over to where he sat. "Are you hurt?" She asked, concern tinging her voice as she bent over to examine it. She noticed the lack of warm clothing on him. "Aren't you cold? Zeh temperature is rather low tonight, no?" Anya didn't have a second thought as she took off her warm sweater and gave it to him. "Vhere are you hurt?" She asked quietly.

Matty only realized how cold the air was when her thick, warm sweater touched his skin.
"I'm a student, too," he replied, rubbing his knee. "I think I skinned it a bit," he muttered, pointing, trying to see. His night vision wasn't doing too well tonight. A sudden thought struck him and he shifted so his fly wasn't visible. He wondered if he was blushing.
"My name's Matty..." he told the girl. He took as good a look at her face as he could in the night and stored it in his memory, needing a name to label it. He fingered the sweater. "Thanks..."

"Of course, of course" She brushed off the thank you. "And just skinning your knee vouldn't cause an ow like zhat to come out of your mouth. Vhere are you hurt?" A little thought popped up in the side of her mind. "By zhe vay, my name is Anya. Nice to meet you Matty." She layed a gentle hand on his arm. "Really, I can help. Please tell me." His arm was cold and she gave it a slight reassuring squeeze and smiled warmly. Thanks to her almost-inhuman-night-vision she could see the slightest pink blush spread over his small cheeks. And that's when she realized he wasn't exactly old enough to be a freshman even. She was too embarassed to ask.

Matty couldn't help but smile back. He liked her smooth but faint accent. He repeated her name in his mind. Anya, Anya, Anya.
"I'm not sure..." he told her, his slight nervousness fading. "I'm just sort of scratched up here and there..." He took the time to mentally check over his body to make sure nothing too bad happened. He noticed his skin was becoming warmer from her hand. "I just don't like falling..."
Matty stood up, brushing himself off again, becoming self-conscious about his lack of clothing. At least it's night...

Anya smiled as he got up. "Are you alright?" She suddenly became very self-concious, slipping into her old role of background wall, blending into the scenery, no one noticing her or caring at all. She couldn't believe this guy had actually said anything to her. Her smile faded away and she turned, bowing her head and turned beat red. "Sorry..." She mumbled. Now, more than ever, she hated her role, stupid role of being blan and nothing and...just not there. She hated it.

"Yes, I'm fine," Matty replied, turning his wrists and bending his legs, making sure everything was okay.
Anya's thoughts seemed to shift. Matty could feel the half-legible words take on a saddened tone. "Hey..." he said. His tone was different-- softer, now. He took her arm like she had to his moments before. "Are you okay? Is something bothering you?" It bothered Matty to see someone feel bad, and he half felt like it was his fault, though he couldn't imagine what he had done. "Don't feel bad..." He wanted it to stop. Her emotions poked at him, like a bug he couldn't brush off.

It kind of startled her when Matty seemed to feel concerned about her. "I...I...I..." She stuttered, flustered as he grabbed her arm. She met his gaze with her face a question mark. He wasn't going to ignore her? Anya could feel her spirits lift. But then they fell again, even harder this time if possible. He probably didn't recognize her, not everyone, or anyone really, had the above average night vision she had. Her eyes begam to swim a little but nothing spilled over, praise Goddess. She couldn't help but feel a painful twist in her stomach.

He couldn't see very well, but Matty could feel her thoughts swim around in a sea of negativity in HIS HEAD. But he didn't just want to stop feeling her emotions-- it truly hurt to see a fellow human being hurt when there was something he could do about it. He would have completely missed the fact that she was almost crying if it were not for a stray beam of moonlight that made a sparkle in her eye.
Why is this girl crying? Matty was confused. He didn't know what had caused this sweet girl misery. 'Cause I'm hurt? No, that can't be it... Did SHE get hurt? Hmmm... I don't think so... He turned these thoughts over in his head, not knowing what to do, how to comfort her. He instead pulled her into a hug, wrapping his arms around her. Oh, maaaan, why do I have to be so COLD!??! he wondered. And short... Anya towered several inches over him.

Anya's mouth turned into an 'O' as he hugged her. She hugged back and then she wasn't crying because she was alone but because she discovered she may actually have a friend. She felt a hysterical giggle bubble up to her lips and just excape a little. "Umm, not zhat I don't like it, but vhy are you hugging me?" She said in his ear. Sure, she had to bend a little but not a whole lot. She wasn't tall but definately a couple inches taller than him. She still didn't fully understand why he was so concerned but she didn't mind too much any more. Okay, she minded that someone was worried but that someone wasn't ignoring her completely. The hug felt especially nice. Impulsively, she began patting that back of his head. "It's okay, you don't need to be distraught. Vhat's zhe matter?"

Matty pulled away slowly, sort of embarrassed. "Nothing..." He stared at Anya, still confused. "Are you SURE you're okay? You seemed sort of upset." It's okay, you don't need to be distraught. Her words turned over and over in his head, repeating. But I want to know, he argued with her in his head. I'll do whatever I want.
"I'm concerned," he replied. "If there's really nothing the matter, then that's fine, but if you're lying, I have a problem with that. If you feel upset, you should TALK about it. It's not right to hold stuff to yourself."

For the third time in probably under ten minutes, this boy had surprised her, flustered her really. "Vell, it's just zhat..." She closed her eyes, thinking about her parents and her life and how agonizingly lonely it had been. As she squeezed her eyes a little her lashes got plastered to her cheeks, now flower pale, with tears that seemed to just overflow on their own. They fell and fell and kept falling.
